01Historic homes near the college
Some of the homes near Main Street and the college have been lived in, rewired and remodeled several times over. A house like that can hold three eras of wiring at once. The job is to find where old meets new, test it, and fix the weak links without gutting plaster you’d rather keep.
02Newer neighborhoods
Outside the core, homes from the 1990s onward usually have modern panels, and the calls are about lighting, chargers and capacity: recessed and cove lighting, a Level 2 charger, or a circuit for a backyard studio or a hot tub.
03Permits and power
Davidson sits in Mecklenburg County, so permits and inspections go through Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. Power comes from Duke Energy for most homes; your bill names your provider.
02Davidson questions
Asked in Davidson.
Can an older Davidson home be rewired without tearing out the walls?
Often, partly. Electricians fish new cable through attics, crawlspaces and existing cavities to keep wall damage small. Some patching is normal, and the plan should say where before work starts.
We’re buying a house in Davidson. Is a separate electrical inspection worth it?
For an older home, it’s inexpensive insurance. A general home inspector flags obvious issues; an electrician goes deeper on the panel, grounding and wiring and tells you what it would cost to correct.
Do I need a permit to add a hot tub circuit?
Yes. A hot tub needs a dedicated circuit with a disconnect and ground-fault protection, and it’s permitted and inspected through Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement.
Burning smell, sparks or a hot panel? Turn off the breaker or the main if you can do it safely, then call (828) 999-2991. Fire or smoke: get out and call 911. For a downed line, stay clear and call your utility.
